Best Standing Desk Bases

In this article we’ll be taking a look at the best standing desk bases which are on the market right now. Before we delve into the different models you’ll find a buyer’s guide which is a must-read before you go ahead with your purchase. Here you’ll find information and considerations regarding manufacturers, base size, height range, weight capacity, controller type and more.

Then we’ll move onto individual specs and pricing for our top 7 picks. You’ll also find a summary of pros and cons to help you decide on the best standing desk base for you.

But first to clarify…

What Is A Standing Desk Base?

Standing desks have been around for a good while, but it’s only recently that they’ve gained such popularity. This is greatly due to the health risks associated with increased sedentary behaviour – or sitting too much – for extended periods of time.

In days gone by we were more active – both inside and outside of work. Our bodies were made to be on the move, and as our lives have changed in our modern working world, we’re suffering physically. Research has found that by alternating between sitting and standing – and generally being more active during the day – we can improve our health, and even add years to our lives.

Adjustable standing desks allow you to easily make the transition from sitting to standing throughout the day. So what is a standing desk base? Quite simply, it’s the bottom part of a standing desk. It’s what some call the frame and it houses the lifting mechanism and supports the desktop.

So whether you already have a desktop or you plan to buy the base first then desktop after, our buyer’s guide below will help you to make the perfect match for your needs.

The Desk Base Buyer’s Guide

In this post, all of the models featured adjust electrically. (Manual lift bases are available and we’ll be covering them separately.) Generally speaking, the higher the spec, the higher the price tag, although this isn’t always the case.

As you’ll see from the individual specs, we’ve chosen our top picks from just 3 manufacturers who are ahead of the game when it comes to product design, quality and customer focus. Here’s a little info about each of them.

About Vivo

Vivo started out in 2002, but it wasn’t until 2012 that  they began making ergonomic office products. Now one of the biggest manufacturers in America, they produce a vast range of standing desks, desk converters, frames and accessories.

Their non-office products include honey extractors, camping cots and pet strollers. Whatever the product, you can be sure of good quality at reasonable prices. In fact Vivo’s mission is “to offer an affordable solution that doesn’t sacrifice quality or functionality.”

To find out more about the Vivo bases featured, click the relevant button after each product. This will give you a direct link to the online retailer Standing Desk Nation. They supply some of the best active office furniture on the market, offering free delivery to the lower 48 US states and a 30-day 100% satisfaction guarantee.

About iMovR

Founded in 2014, iMovR is part of the Thermogenesis Group and offers one of the widest choices of standing desks, desk converters, conference tables and treadmill desks. Their range also includes accessories such as anti-fatigue mats, power and cable management systems and storage solutions.

iMovR’s innovative approach to production and design means their products are top quality, they look great and they’re built to last. This is backed up by some of the best warranties on the market. (See individual specs for details.)

We’ve featured 4 iMovR bases in this post. They are each great products with something a little different to offer. There’s a direct link to the iMovR website under each product section below. Again, shipping is free to the lower 48 US states and worldwide shipping is available on orders over $100. iMovR also offers a 100-day satisfaction guarantee.

About Ergonofis

With Ergonofis, their product range is less about quantity and more about quality. Their portfolio consists of just 3 standing desks and one base (see pick 5 – the Ergo Frame – below), along with a chair and a limited selection of accessories. However, do not let this put you off!

Based in Montreal, Ergonofis is a small, fairly new set-up that started out as an online personal training provider dedicated to fighting the harmful effects of sitting too much. The co-founders moved into manufacturing, with a passion for making life better for the everyday office worker, along with a “relentless obsession towards quality.”

The result is thoughtfully designed, top grade products. Ergonofis ship mainly to Canada and the US, but global shipping is available. Their standing desks are covered by a 30-day trial period. Click for a direct link to Ergonofis under the Ergo Frame spec.

Here’s what we’ve covered in the individual model specifications :

The bases featured are extendable and you’ll see in the specs below we’ve given you the minimum and maximum width measurements. You will also find measurements for the feet which can help with planning for tight spaces.

At the end of each spec are the recommended desktops dimensions for each base to help you match up properly. As for desktop thickness, the minimum recommended measurement is 0.75 inches.

Height Range

All of the models featured have a good height range – you’ll find the minimum and maximum heights for each model in the specs. Add your desktop thickness to calculate the actual working desk height. Remember to factor in footwear when measuring and if you plan on using an anti-fatigue mat or an under desk treadmill, these will also add inches to your height requirements.

As a guideline, each of the bases should be suitable for users up to at least 5 feet 10 inches tall, not including heels, standing mat and so on. The highest base can extend to over 50 inches. With a desktop included, this height should be suitable for users up to around 6 feet 8 inches tall. Some bases can be heightened further with leg extenders or casters. (See individual specs.)

Note : these recommended desk heights are guidelines and are based on “average” body proportions. Go to Omnicalculator to find out more about ergonomic desk height.

Weight Capacity

The maximum weight capacity of each base is given. This is the total maximum weight, so as well as your equipment, factor in the weight of the desktop itself to ensure you don’t exceed the limit.

Controller Type

The simpler controllers use only up and down buttons. At the other end of the scale, some allow you to program different height settings, set sit / stand reminders and are Bluetooth enabled, linking up to free apps.

If you’re going to be sharing your desk, opting for a base which allows you to pre-set heights will give you quicker adjustment for the exact heights required. If you’re keen to track your sitting / standing times, calories burned and so on, we suggest opting for a Bluetooth enabled model.

If the desk is just for you and you don’t need the added Bluetooth feature, opting for a lower end controller will give you a more pocket-friendly option.
