As you will see, for each of the products in this post we’ve given you a handy snapshot of the basic specs followed by more in-depth product information. At the end of each section you’ll find pros and cons for each desk to help you decide which might work best for you.

As well as desktop dimensions and maximum weight capacity, we’ve detailed the height range of each desk, along with the maximum user height as recommended by Inch Calculator.

Use these recommended measurements as a guide, but before you go ahead and choose your desk we would recommend that you take actual measurements to ensure the right fit between you and your workstation – especially if you are shorter or taller than average.

You can visit the Occupational Safety and Health Administration website for clear guidance on how to do this correctly. Click here for their Computer Workstation eTool guidance. (For seated and standing positions.)

When measuring up for standing work, remember to add inches if you wear heels or if you use an anti-fatigue mat or a balance board. This also applies if you use an under desk treadmill.

Click here to see our posts on under desk treadmills, also known as walking workstations.

It’s as important to take measurements for seated work as it is for standing, unless you intend to use your desk for standing only.

If the desk you’ve chosen is too high for you to work sitting down you could try a different seating arrangement – perhaps a height-adjustable chair to bring you closer to the desktop. Check the height range of the chair to make sure it can elevate you to the right position. Also, make sure the chair features a foot rest or bar for support when your feet aren’t on the ground.

The desks we’ve featured in this article range from 48 inches to 63 inches in width. Be sure to measure your space requirements, especially if you’re setting up a home office for the first time where you may have less room than at work.

As we mentioned before, all of the models in our top 5 were chosen because they are good quality and value for money at under $500. Prices fluctuate as new products come on the market or during sales periods so we’ve given you the price range of each desk in the “At a Glance” sections. (Correct at the time of publishing.) About the Eureka Desk

Our first desk has the lowest list price but has a lot to offer all the same. The black matt desktop is made with high strength density board which features rubber coating edge protection. It’s waterproof, stain resistant and easy to clean. It’s also environmentally friendly as formaldehyde emissions are much lower than international standards.

For safety the base features anti-collision technology, balance protection and a self-locking system. There are 4 programmable memory pre-sets for your favorite heights and adjustment is easy and smooth by means of dual motors.

The weight capacity is way up front at 260 pounds which is great for heavier equipment. In contrast though, the Eureka desktop has the smallest surface area of our top 5 so you may need a little more space if you have a lot of kit.

Assembly is straightforward which is another plus point. However, this commercial grade desk with high quality materials and construction comes with just a 2-year limited manufacturer’s warranty which is a little disappointing.

PROs – lowest price, great weight capacity, good safety features.

CONs – only 2-year warranty, smaller desktop size.

About the MotionWise Desk

As well as the gray top and light gray frame as pictured, this model is also available with a black or walnut color desktop. (Plus there’s a white top / white frame option.) The desktop itself is made with heavy duty particle board which is up to 4 times stronger than regular board, also making it resistant to changes in humidity and temperature.

The MotionWise desk has a sliding drawer which although small – dimensions are 20 x 8 x 2 inches – is handy for pens, notes, phones and so on. The controller allows you to pre-set 4 heights and there’s a USB charger built-in, making it easier to keep your gadgets up and running whilst within reach.

With the MotionWise desk, adjustment is again smooth and easy by means of dual motors, and although the weight capacity doesn’t quite match up to the Eureka model, it’s still a good weight at 225 pounds. Space-wise, the desktop is only very slightly larger than the previous model so you may need to take it up a notch if you have a lot of equipment.

The desktop and frame are pre-assembled so you only need to attach the legs, feet and controller which should take around 10 – 15 minutes. However, the unit is fairly heavy so you’ll need an extra pair of hands to help lift and turn the desk once assembly is complete.

There’s a 5-year warranty on the desktop and 2-year cover for mechanical parts.

PROs – extras (charging port and drawer), good desktop warranty, easy assembly.

CONs – smaller desktop size.

Additional certification has been awarded from the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) and UL (Underwriter Laboratories) for meeting safety and quality standards.

Assembly should take no longer than an hour. There’s a 5-year warranty for the frame, motor and other mechanics, with 2-year cover for the controller, switch and electronics.

About the Fezibo Desk

This 55 inch model by Fezibo is available in rustic brown and black as pictured, or with a white frame and outer panels plus a light natural wood color central section. (Also available in a 48 inch width which has made our top 5 for Best Electric Desks Under $300.)

There are 3 programmable height settings and the Fezibo features anti-collision technology to help keep your desk and equipment protected and damage-free. The black frame is made with heavy duty steel and the dual motors lift and lower smoothly and steadily.

Assembly should take between half an hour to an hour. Fezibo offer a 7-year warranty and have a dedicated tech team at hand for any queries or support needs.

About the VIVO Desk

Our final pick features a matte white desktop combined with a white frame, giving this model a clean, minimalist look. If that’s a little too clinical for you, there’s a black top and frame option available as well. The MDF desktop has a scratch-resistant laminate finish and features an inward curve at the front plus rounded corners for safety. (Desk depth at the slimmest point is 28 inches.) The desktop comes in 3 parts which fit together tightly when the whole desk is assembled.

The frame is made from solid steel construction and has a weight capacity of 176 pounds. (Note : the desktop weighs 42 pounds, leaving 134 pounds for your equipment.) The desk is extremely stable and there are adjustable feet to keep your desk completely level.

The controller can be placed on either the left or right-hand side of the desk and there’s an option to set up to 3 of your favorite heights in the memory function. You can also program sit / stand reminders. The desk will go into power saving mode after 60 seconds of inactivity which you can easily exit at the touch of a button.

There’s a cable management tray big enough for a power strip. Also included are grommets and cable clips to keep your wires together safely and out of sight.  Assembly should take between 30 minutes to 1 hour. (An electric drill is recommended to speed the process up.) The VIVO desk comes with a 3-year warranty.

We really like VIVO products. In particular, the VIVO 43″ standing desk made our top 5 for electric desks under $300. Click here to read more.

PROs – great size, great maximum height, good cable management.

CONs – low weight capacity, upper end of price range.

The Best Electric Desk Takeaway

Hopefully, after checking out our top picks for the best electric desks under $500 you’ve found what you were looking for, or at the very least you have a better idea of what it is that you want.

There’s a lot to think about when buying a standing desk, and even though these models are relatively low in price, it’s still a lot of money to part with so you need to be sure you’re making the right choice.

Let’s take a quick look at the key points we covered with the desks featured above :

  • First off we had the Eureka Ergonomics 48″ desk – with the lowest price (at just over $300), with an excellent weight capacity and good safety features. This model has a relatively small working area though and just a 2-year warranty.
  • Next we looked at the MotionWise 48″ desk – similar to the previous model in size and weight capacity but with a better warranty plus a charging port and small accessory drawer as added extras.
  • Third up was the FlexiSpot 55″ desk – with a great price, a good choice of colors and sizes plus certification for safety and quality. The weight capacity is quite low though, so if you’ve got a lot of equipment that could be an issue.
  • Pick number 4 was the Fezibo 55″ – a little higher in price but with an excellent warranty plus added extras and an unusual design.
  • Finally we looked at the VIVO 63″ desk – great on size and height but with a weight capacity on the low side. Also on the upper end of the price range but very well made and good quality.

It’s a toughie! Have a think about what’s important to you, and what features you can or can’t live without. Or perhaps you’re looking for more than this price range can offer.
